Basse fondamentale is the progression of chord roots. The phrase itself originates from French – in English, the phenomenon is traditionally denoted as the fundamental bass.
The so-called doctrine of figures, which drew the line between bass and chords, allowed for specifying the relationship between the bass and the melody, thus, bringing melody and speech together.
