Transposition is mainly rectified through a surgical operation on the infant, normally during the first week of their life or at suitable timing. The surgical operation should rectify the situation, and the child is expected to live a normal life thereafter, including participation in sports and other physical activities. However, in some instances, the reattachment of the pulmonary artery and the aorta to the normal ventricle may cause narrowing (stenosis) at the point where the vessels are attached. In other instances, the aorta grows to be inflated as it crops up from the left ventricle. Constant observation by a cardiologist is necessary for the early detection of problems.
Ezra, a newborn baby, needs surgery because she was born with an aorta that arises from the right ventricle and a pulmonary trunk that arises from the left ventricle, a condition called transposition of the great vessels. What are the physiological consequences of this defect?
