The Progressive Era in the United States lasted from 1890 to 1920 and was marked by substantial progress and change. American society at the period was faced with many problems, and progressivism offered many answers to these problems. Among other things, progressives aspired to promote morality and economic and social reforms, and the well-being of the community. A wide range of societal issues was addressed in this period. The Muckrakers were a group of activists who sought to uncover societalinjustices. Muckrakers, such as Upton Sinclair and Jacob Riis, exposed corrupt politicians while also applying pressure.
In the progressive era, many critical elements of scientific management methods were used to increase government efficiency. However, many yearned for a more democratic society. Wisconsin Governor Robert M. La Follette was a staunch supporter of democracy and was known for his stubbornness. In addition, he requested that political parties hold primaries. The women’s suffrage movement rose in popularity in the early 1900s during the progressive era, and many people were interested in it. To be taken seriously by the rest of society, women began protesting and even going on long-term hunger strikes. When the Senate eventually took these women’s concerns into account on August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment was approved, granting women the right to vote for the first time.
