In the aftermath of the brawl between players and fans in 2004, a commissioner called to increase the age requirement for NBA players from the age of 18 to 20. While there are six tenets of critical race theory (CRT), in her article, Rachel Griffin focuses on interest convergence, racism, and Whiteness, as she argues about the actual treatment of Black males in the NBA. Griffin explains that the league supports the interests of the White population represented by shareholders, sponsors, and fans to increase revenue, thus neglecting Black athletes.

Moreover, she points out that while the NBA claims to be colorblind and progressive, it maintains Whiteness and uses Black players for its benefit.
