Examine the instructions you may have given to a client when the person is discharged from the hospital, emergency room, or following a routine visit to their health care provider. Compare the readability level of the instructions to the client’s educational level. What does this tell you about how easy it will be for the client to follow the instructions when at home? What other barriers to compliance would need to be considered?

The provision of effective patient education is among the key responsibilities of healthcare specialists. Apart from the content of instructions given to patients, the relationship between clients’ level of education and the lexical structure of materials should be considered to ensure compliance with self-care recommendations. To achieve success, healthcare professionals can use online tools to calculate the readability of materials to be used. As for particular practical cases, a few weeks ago, I provided a 19-year-old patient with instructions related to the basics of wound care at home. For this assignment, the main points explained to the client were listed and analyzed using the readability analysis tool.
The recreated text is shorter compared to the original one, and it contains only the summary of the key points explained to the patient. According to the results, its SMOG readability index is 6.2, which means that a person should be able to read at an intermediate level (grade 6) to understand the recommendations properly. The client is a college student and a native speaker of English, and this is why following the received instructions at home is likely to be easy for him. The simplicity of the recommendations and the fact that he did not ask questions to gain clarity during the conversation support this supposition.

Importantly, the level of readability is not the only barrier to patients’ compliance with instructions. Other factors affecting the success of education include lack of clarity about diagnosis, patients’ issues related to time management, or even the manifestations of self-neglect. In the case being discussed, the only barrier associated with potential risks is the patient’s busy schedule affecting his ability to implement all recommendations with precision.
