Aging stereotypes make a detrimental impact on older people, whose physical health can decline, yet social and cultural identification remains. However, when such patients or nurses observe the negative statements of others regarding their age, it is likely to decrease their mental functioning and even affect physical well-being. Cardiovascular problems, hearing loss, and memory deterioration are noted among the most critical outcomes. In general, older adult patients tend to develop self-stereotypes of aging, believing that their cognitive performance reduces even though it does not occur rapidly. Dionigi reports that placing emphasis on positive stereotypes about aging is one of the ways to weaken the adverse impacts. The opportunity to maintain active control of their lives and increase self-efficiency is also useful to address the negative impacts of aging stereotypes.
