In 1963, Thomas Starzl, an American physician, performed the first human liver transplant. James Hardy, an American surgeon, performed the first human lung transplant in the same year. Both operations were revolutionary; before that, scientists had not been able to achieve such significant success. The two surgeries started the program improving the recovery of people whose cases had previously seemed hopeless.
