System design involves designing the following:
- System architecture – to describe the structures, behavior, and logic models of a system.
- System modules – to handle one specific task or several tasks.
- System components – made up of a particular function or group of related functions derived from modules.
- System interfaces – are shared boundaries across which system components interact and exchange information.
- System data – to manage the flow of data and information within a system
Therefore, there are two main goals of the system design process (SDP). First, to accurately describe data and information about a system. Second, to correctly describe system elements failure to which it would be impossible to create a system in which architecture co-exists peacefully with logic models.
For these reasons, the following are the main tasks executed during SDP:
Initial design definitions
- Identifying appropriate system elements.
- Picking system elements may become obsolete during the operation stage.
- Recording the design definition strategy.
- Identifying enabling systems, products, or services that will help execute or perform the design.
Establishing design characteristics
- Identifying design characteristics compatible with the architectural feature.
- Defining interfaces excluded from the system architecture Process.
- Defining design characteristics of every system element.
- Recording the design characteristics of every system element.
Assessment of alternatives ways of generating system elements
- Evaluating alternative design options.
- Picking the best alternative design option.
- After the decision to develop a system element, the existing design definition and implementation procedures are used. When the choice is to purchase or recycle a system element, an acquisition process is applied to create the system element.
Managing the system design
- Evaluating reasons for all selections on decisions for the design, available alternatives, and architecture characteristics.
- Controlling the creation of the design characteristics.
