The New Year’s Eve feast is interrupted as the Green Knight enters the banquet hall. The Knight is introduced when King Arthur, who previously refused to eat without hearing a remarkable story, finally has his attention drawn to the incoming guest. The guest is described as an attractive tall man: “in height outstripped all earthly men,” “handsomest of horsemen.” Hence, the appearance of such a man proved to be quite impactful on the other guests.
As it is noted that “men gaped at the hue of him,” an image of pure shock and awe is depicted in the reader’s mind. Undoubtedly, none of the people at the festivity expected a green man to arrive, especially since this color’s prominence is exaggerated through a green horse, costume, and hair. Another noticeable feature of the Green Knight was the “huge and monstrous” he held in one hand. The gold and green ax adds to the intimidating portrayal of the character.
