In the past, a health worker could be a patient’s only source of information about disease and treatment. Nowadays, a patient can access other sources of knowledge about health issues, e.g. Internet portals. While self-education may be beneficial, not every patient has enough expertise to appraise the information critically and make the right decision. Therefore, patient education requires more effort from a health worker and is based not on asserting authority but on building trust.
