According to Sarah Grimke, how was antebellum patriarchy supported by the law?

The law supported antebellum patriarchy in that it gave females no voice or no value in political existence. Grimke compared the role of women to that of slaves, saying that both were merely counted but not considered as equal members of society. Just like slaves belonged to their masters, so did women belong to their husbands, given no legal rights at all.
