Freedom is a relative state of one’s physical body or mind because people may not be incarcerated but still be enslaved mentally to other individuals’ will. A person can have good employment but may feel trapped in the office because of the obligation to be constantly available to the employer.

On the other hand, a farmer getting income only from selling the fruit of one’s work in a garden is emotionally free from the stress and pressure often present in big corporations. The reverse is possible because the latter may not have the same financial freedom as the former.

However, personal freedom also depends on a country’s political or social circumstances. For example, a citizen of a democratic government has more opportunities to express oneself than someone living in an authoritarian regime, which often violates human rights.

Still, it is frequently defined by an individual’s perception of a situation because people can consider themselves free or not free in either case.

One of the prominent examples of the fact that freedom is not an absolute concept is the statement of Michael Cohen, a former attorney of Donald Trump. Specifically, when Cohen was sentenced to three years of imprisonment, he claimed that it was the day when he was getting his freedom back.

This statement was unexpected and unusual for a person who would be in jail for a certain period. However, this lawyer seemed to mean him being released “from the clutches of the president of the United States”. It appears that Trump’s attorney felt more confined when working for this influential man with a questionable reputation.
