What were the leisure preferences of at least two gang members from Edward Abbey’s book ‘The Monkey Wrench Gang’?

Abbzug’s leisure time

Ms. Abbzug is an independent woman who is wise and self-driven as she works hard not only for her transformation but also for the good of other people. Earlier, Abbzug works in various places where she is a waitress, receptionist, and teller trainer. Abbzug is a 28-year-old graduate who loves nature more especially mountains and the desert. As the doctor’s receptionist, Abbzug develops a relationship with Survey after he loses his wife in a plane crash. Thus, it is through her line of duty that enables her to meet and know doctor Survey. She devotes herself not only to her job but also to her activities with Survey. Abbzug stays with Survey for more than two years and always assists him in office duties, nurse aid, and driving.

Apart from work, Anbbzug spends most of her time with the doctor as they go to different places together. She is so supportive and often accompanies Survey whenever he goes to his beautification projects at the night. She enjoyed and liked most of the night activities because there was a time she saw a beautification and said, “Beautiful.”

Although these two partners have stayed together for a long time, they are not married as Abbzug is not so much in love. Probably this is because the doctor is 21 years older than her.

Regardless of the age difference, Abbzug and Survey still continues with their relationship and spend time together. Other than spending time with Survey, Abbzug spends time alone in her house where she can either rest, meditate, tend her nurture her potted plants and her tomato patch. At times she spends her time dusting her unread books, brushing her nice hair, or exercising in the house. As part of a gang group, the receptionist spends time with the three other members who as a team, work to develop their environment. Abbzug also likes dancing although she quit as it is too demanding for her.

Survis’s leisure time

Dr. Survis is a widower whose wife died in a plane crash and left him with grown-up children who left him to start a life elsewhere. Initially, after the death, Dr. Survis is lonely although this changes when he develops a relationship with his receptionist, Abbzug. His receptionist consoles him during and after the funeral as they gradually know each other more. Survis’s love life is reignited again as he loves Abbzug so much although he receives partial love from her. Several times, Survis proposes his hand in marriage but unfortunately, she turns him down whenever he brings up the topic. According to the doctor, Abbzug is not only his partner but also his mother because the author says, “His mother also loved him. Of course, his mother had no choice. That’s what she was paid for.” Abbzus is supportive because other than office duties, she accompanies him on various trips.

Even in his old age, Survis still travel a lot at night although his receptionist guides lead the way as he has a poor sight. One particular time as Abbzug is driving the doctor says, “Drive on, Bonnie. This river aggravates my melancholia.” This indicates that Survis is keen even though he is not driving. The doctor likes spending his time night riding, beautifying the surroundings, and burning billboards. Most of the time he gets assistance from Abbzug who helps him drive the vehicle in the night. In his various beautification projects, the doctor ensures that he carries his tools that including McCulloch chain and chain saw. Survis and Abbzug use these tools to beautify and destruct billboards.

Survis enjoys every time he spends with his receptionist and also carrying out his nighttime activities. Survis also spends his time with the gang group which together they engage in conservation activities. As a doctor, Survey does not forget his patients whom he likes visiting in the hospital. He develops a friendship with some of them as he talks to them during his frequent visits. This indicates how caring the doctor is because he uses part of his leisure time to visit the patients. Survis also spends part of his time with the gang group which consists of people namely Abbzug, Smith, Hayduke, and himself. During his time with the gang, Survis works together with them tirelessly to prevent the infringement of industry and expansion into the four areas of the American’s southwest. Predominantly, Survis and the other gang members ensure that they conserve the environment. In his leisure time, the doctor keeps himself busy by demolishing bulldozers and derailing coal trains.
