What was the 54th Regiment?

A regiment refers to a military unit whose size depends on the type of specialization or service to be offered in a country. The 54th Regiment was an infantry regiment that saw the first black army units assembled in Massachusetts during the American Civil War. It came into existence in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which paved the way for black soldiers to be included in the army.
