In The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, an unnamed narrator is a woman who has started to show signs of depression and anxiety. Due to her condition, she is prevented from doing any work and tended by other characters. Her husband John, a physician, and his sister Jennie restrict and imprison the woman. She performs the role of a housekeeper. Some people believe that the narrator is not named throughout the story to indicate that she represents herself and the group of people: other women who have been overprotected or mistreated based on a mental illness.
There is also another theory. At the end of the story, the narrator tells her husband: “I’ve got out at last,” <ā¦> “despite you and Jane.”. Some researchers believe that this phrase indicates that her name is Jane. It also means that she hints at her role in allowing her to be repressed. Others, however, claim that it might be a misprint, and the narrator refers to Jennie.
