What is a post hoc test, and why is it important?

Post hoc tests are conducted after the ANOVA to determine the origin of the differences if they were found. So, if ANOVA shows differences between groups, post hoc shows precisely what the differences are. This is important because it allows for an in-depth analysis of differences and identifies variables that may be influencing the differences.
