What events led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989?

Some of the events that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 were the removal of the Iron Curtain, the dissolution of the Soviet Bloc, and the lack of political will in the Kremlin to enforce its political views on its former satellites. It started with the opening of the borders between Austria and Hungary, followed by a gradual weakening of the border regime between FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) and GDR (German Democratic Republic). The change of leadership in the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and a course for reunification culminated in the opening of the Brandenburg gates on 22 December 1989.
