One of the most important economic problems in America today is a huge public debt. The Federal Reserve kept rates near zero and carried out three rounds of quantitative easing. The problem with a high level of public debt is that the government has to spend more money to pay interest on it. Accordingly, it is necessary either to reduce expenses on other items or to borrow much more. For the past seven years, with the economy recovering at its slowest pace since the late 1940s, the government has continued to spend more money than is available in the country.
