What are the sound legal or ethical justifications for breaking confidentiality?

The main legal and ethical justifications for breaking confidentiality are serious/foreseeable harm and legal requirements, end-of-life decisions, life-threatening and contagious diseases, court-ordered disclosure, and minimal disclosure. Counselors are forced to disclose the client’s information only if the given information is valuable and can prevent serious damage or destruction in the future. In addition, counselors are obliged to disclose private information only if the client is planning to commit suicide or carries a contagious and lethal disease, such as an infection. Lastly, a counselor cannot disobey the court’s decision to disclose confidential information. Thus, he or she must comply with the order. Minimal disclosure is possible only if the client was warned beforehand.
