What are plasmodesmata?

When studying the morphological structure of plant cells, many plasmodesmata are found in the intercellular space. Plasmodesmata are microscopic cytoplasmic tubules that connect two plant cells and stimulate metabolism. It is not usually a virtual cylindrical channel but rather a collection of pores in the cell walls by which such cells become physically and chemically connected.
