The Body Shop asks potential employees questions about “personal heroes” and individual beliefs. Is it ethical to ask such questions of applicants? Are these questions legitimate ones to ask in the first place? Are such questions fair to the applicants?

To ask people about their personal heroes and beliefs is not unethical. It becomes unethical when the information got is used to discriminate against an individual. This is because everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and preferences as people are different. The differences lead to diversity, and it should be tolerated. These questions are not legitimate to ask because they have no relation to the kind of work an individual may be given at the firm. For example, you might like a certain personality who has different beliefs from those of the firm and still do your job well at that firm. The questions are not fair to the applicants as they do not know that they are used to judge them. Thus they may put them at a disadvantage by giving answers that are contrary to the firm’s liking.

Applicants end up missing an opportunity that they deserved just because they have a contrary belief. A good example is a retail director who lost a chance because he said he loved hunting, yet Roddick despised it due to her support for animal rights.
