Should industry officials be held responsible for dumping chemicals that were legal when they did it but are now known to be extremely dangerous? At what point can we agree that they should have known about the hazards involved?

The responsibility for dumping toxic chemicals should fall to the companies that dumped them. Regardless of whether or not they were legal at the time disposal took place, these billion-dollar companies should pay for the cleanup. There are always procedures in place for the safe disposal of toxic or even potentially toxic chemicals. Knowing now that certain chemicals have been harmful to the environment should send motivation to these companies to preserve the Earth. If they will not assist in cleanup willingly, then the companies should be fined and sanctioned, and then forced to clean up.

At some point, any company that has disposed of any waste should have realized the potential for these materials to cause harm to the environment. Think of it this way: if a person cannot eat or breathe a chemical for fear of becoming ill, why then should it be introduced into the drinking and bathing water, ground soil, or air? Eventually, all these things assist with the growth of food, feeding of animals, and consumption by humans. Therefore, the irresponsible introduction of toxins in the environment was potentially realized from the very first moment it was introduced.
