The consolidated clinical document architecture (CCDA) messaging framework developed by the Health Level Seven International focuses on presenting the structure and semantics of messaging in healthcare settings. This framework has both benefits and challenges, which provide the direction for further improvements. In particular, among the key benefits, one may distinguish an XML element, wholeness, and readability. According to Rocha, Pabbathi, Schaeffer, and Goldberg, CCDA allows storing any clinical data, be it special reports, discharge data, or a patient’s history. The so-called XML element ensures that even structured data is stored and may be viewed by the interested parties. At the same time, the key challenge of CCDA is the quality of data collected since some reports may be missing a critical element or mixing different reports. In addition, the consistency of data is also a weak point of CCDA, as shown in the study by Rocha et al. This automatic and standardized framework for messaging may violate the consistency that creates a threat to the proper interpretation of a patient’s condition and progress in treatment. It should also be emphasized that the use of CCDA may be associated with system failures and potential data leakage.
