Read “Borders” (1993) by Thomas King. Using exactly 5 sentences in a single paragraph, summarize the main events of the short story. Do not quote. Both the mother and the border guard take on specific symbolic roles. What are the positions of each character and what, exactly, do they symbolize? How does King use assumptions to reveal the underlying colonial structures that inform the way we think? Are any assumptions often made about your own identity? Analyze the assumption based on the definition of post-colonial analysis.

Laetitia moved from Canada to the United States as a teenager. A few years later, her mother, together with her son, decided to visit her daughter, who lives in Salt Lake City. They fail to cross the border successfully because the mother refused to acknowledge her Canadian citizenship before the border guards. The situation attracted media attention, and border guards allowed Native Americans to pass. The story ends with a happy meeting of mother, son, and daughter.

The mother’s position is that her identity is her ethnicity, while the female border guard considers citizenship to be her identity. The first symbolizes Native Americans as a whole, while the latter is the European colonialists who established a new order on the American land.

“When I was twelve, maybe thirteen, my mother announced that we were going to go to Salt Lake City to visit my sister who had left the reserve, moved across the line, and found a job.” Laetitia, unlike her mother, bases her identity on citizenship and not on ethnicity.

Through assumptions in which simple phrases and common situations are present, the author points out colonial mindset patterns and indirectly makes readers think about the colonial core of their thinking.

People often say that I am a multicultural person and very receptive to new cultures. It means I live in a mixed society of ancestors of former colonizers and descendants of those colonized.
