Prof Kobie describes the role of freedom (free will) as “giving the law to oneself.” Explain what this phrase means as best you can.

Kant believed that morality is synonymous with reason, meaning that acting morally is the same thing as acting in accordance with reason. By “giving the law to oneself,” a person decides his or her own moral rules to live by. He believed that as rational agents, people must obey these moral laws. Kant refers to the autonomy that humans possess in creating their own moral obligations that they must follow in every situation. Since he believed that acting morally is the only rational way, the only legitimate authority that can be placed on an individual, according to Kant, is one administered by the individual himself.
