The education provided to the patient before the surgical intervention includes controlling the anesthesia pump that allows the patient to control the amount and timing of medication that is required for pain relief. The patient is also instructed in deep breathing to ease the pain, improving lung functioning by extended lung exercises and in the positions in which the pain is not that severe.

It is recommended to a patient to change position from time to time and ambulating as soon as possible to enhance gastrointestinal functioning and increase respiratory functioning. The patient might have the indwelling Foley catheter before and after the surgery. The NG tube is connected to prevent gastric secretion accumulation and gastric dilatation after the intervention. Poor nutrition prevents healing after the surgery and makes the recovery process more complicated. Thus, oral liquids should be given to the patient in the postoperative period.
