Two EBP-related concepts that I would like to apply to my practice are external evidence and patient values and expectations. Unfortunately, there is a certain lack of standardization when it comes to treatment. Many health practitioners rely on what they are used to and what they are taught by their supervisors. External evidence is indifferent to what is seen as normal in a given healthcare facility. It makes health workers question their knowledge and traditions and critically evaluate what they do every day at work. Respecting patient values and knowing their expectations is consistent with one of the basic ethical principles – patient autonomy. The nursing research course taught me that treating a patient is interacting with him or her and not doing things to him. Every patient is an independent human being whose bodily and mental integrity is to be respected.
