How would you formulate a description of early America that would take into account not only opportunity but also frustration, disappointment, and danger?

People who crossed the Atlantic in the seventeenth century were inspired by the idea of starting a brand-new life, regardless of their past. Moving to America was a chance for them to escape poverty caused by the unstable economic situation in England at that time. A vast land full of resources seemed to be a great place to make a fortune. Also, many new settlers were looking for religious freedom because of the growing conflict between Catholics and Protestants.

Despite obvious opportunities, early migrants to America were exposed to high risks during the process of colonization. They had to endure many hardships in pursuit of welfare on the other side of the world. Many settlers did not have any money to live on and were entirely at the mercy of landlords. Often people were subjected to violence and mistreatment. Another problem was hostile relations with Indians who were determined to protect their land from intruders. Those who were lucky to avoid an arrow suffered from diseases caused by poor living conditions.
