Examine Kantian Ethics, or Deontology. Focus on rule-based ethics, where unlike Utilitarianism, the intent of the agent plays an important role.

Contributing to the happiness of others seems to rely on the fact that people doing so ignore their own wants. However, these individuals use themselves as both an end in themselves and a means to others’ ones, satisfying the deontological formulation of humanity. Furthermore, if run through the appropriate questions, this maxim of pure altruism could be found to be a perfect duty, falling short of being widely applicable and, thus, becoming one that adherents must always support. Applying this result to the charity case, wherein two uncontrollable outcomes and two controllable intents exist, shows that these two outlined variables constitute two equivalent driving forces. If a sense of responsibility to help humanity influences both people, then they both attempt to uphold a perfect duty, which remains unfulfilled in the case of a failed charity event. Therefore, as per Kantian ethics, both intent and result should matter in this case.
