According to Durkheim, work specialization is directly proportional to a society’s rich or ethical complexity. Thus, it is characterized as a mix of a firm or community’s population density and degree of institutionalization. Durkheim describes how the division of work, the development of specific occupations for specific persons, improves society by increasing a process’s reproduction potential and the employees’ competence base. Additionally, it fosters a sense of community among those who undertake those responsibilities.
However, Durkheim asserts that the division of work extends beyond financial considerations. It also develops cultural and ethical discipline within a society in the process. Durkheim contends that division of labor can only occur amongst individuals of an already formed community.
Therefore, I greatly agree with Durkheim that division of labor enhances solidarity in the workplace. At the SSFC Research station, work was distributed according to the field of expertise an individual held academically. The form of solidarity that would best explain my society is organic solidarity. Organic cohesion is a more complicated system comprising distinct functions bound by defined relationships. Organic solidarity is a feature of collective bonding that occurs when individuals require the services of one another.
There is a more significant division of work in an organically solid community, with people acting similarly to a live body’s interrelated but distinct components. Society depends less on enforcing universal standards for everyone and more on managing the interactions of various groups and individuals, frequently through increased reliance on agreements and regulations.
Therefore, due to the complexity of innovation, the diversity of commodities, and unique expertise, an individual’s identity is masked as one who produces to meet the purchasing demands of unknown individuals. In modern society, due to specialization, people are reduced to secondary producers, reliant on the operational talents of others for existence. Thus, Durkheim argues that the larger the community, the denser the concentration and the more the reliance on one another, thereby quickening the reciprocal exchange of individuals. Since people are generally unknown to one another but rely on one another, they seek an effective system to ensure that others contribute to their requirements and vice versa.
Thus, state-enforced commercial regulations, professional statutes, and various civil laws encourage moral homogeneity between men and, subsequently, between people and society. As a result, the organization of modern society necessitates the presence of organic unions between individuals and occupational groups.
