The innate immune system is the body’s first line of defense against infections; it collectively responds to all threats. Innate immunity, however, has limited power to stop germs from spreading. The adaptive immune response is pathogen-specific. The adaptive immune response is designed to fight pathogens, but it can occasionally go wrong and target itself.
