From the Excerpt given it is possible to draw a decently accurate presumption about Mah’s character and past. Mah is shown to be an experienced saleswoman, able to resist the haggling and bargaining that usually comes with the trade. This is proven by the part in the excerpt that shows her unmoved by a customer’s constant attempts to get her to lower the prices of her merchandise. She is shown to be fair at her work as she agrees to ignore taxes on bought items if the customer agrees to buy the item at the offered price.

Later on, when the author reveals the fact that she has married secretly, Mah shows that she is extremely well practiced in not letting her emotions get the better of her and keeping them in check until revealing them produces the least consequences. She shows an extraordinary amount of tolerance and love for her daughter when she forgives her for the secretive marriage without any punishment. Mah probably had a difficult past which shaped her into the strong tolerant and kind woman she is portrayed to be. It is suggested that she has been through a difficult first marriage and then numerous subsequent marriages. Whether she has more than one child or not can not be deducted from the excerpt.
