Zhang Hongtu’s “Bird’s Nest,” 2008, is filled with explosive political messages from death to basic civil rights for the people of China. The artwork depicts the Chinese National Stadium and sheds light on the political and social issues of the country and the government. What do you think is the purpose of the work, and is Hongtu’s artwork important globally?

“Bird’s Nest” by Zhang Hongtu.

During the Birds Nest painting display in Germany, positive views from the art community qualified the art as necessary. It is centered around the Olympics, metaphorically gathering nations in one place. The artist highlighted the need to take care of the environment globally, not just in China, even though it addressed China.

The painting also features political injustices instigated towards vulnerable communities (Tibet Monks) and encourages the people to hold back judgment before getting the whole story. The issues Hongtu has addressed are contemporary issues that face the world. Hongtu was shedding light on what was hidden, allowing him to play his part as an artist.

The work of art addressed above highlights the political injustices placed on vulnerable communities. The actual work of artists has been highlighted in these images working as eye-openers of our time. Artists should act as voices of our time, standing up for what is right and using their pieces to make the world a better place.

Works of art do not attempt to introduce a picture of what people have found in nature yet what they have felt, thought, and envisioned with regard to nature. Nobody cares whether the painted tones and shapes resemble the genuine article or not.
