You are helping a previously independent 85-year-old patient move into an assisted living situation after she experienced a hip fracture. She had wanted to return to her home where she lived alone, but reluctantly agreed to the assisted living facility after being pressured to do so by her daughter. What factors might make this patient more susceptible to depression. What signs or symptoms would alert you to the possibility of depression?

A

Depression among the elderly is a widespread issue. It is especially relevant for the individuals who live isolated from their families and are exposed to severe illnesses or disabilities. There might be several factors contributing to the exposure of the patient to the depressive syndrome, including pain related to trauma, loneliness, previously experienced depressions in a younger age, and stress related to the injury. For me, as a specialist, particular symptoms might indicate the presence of depressive disorder in the patient. The symptoms include fatigue, slow movements, sad mood, loss of interest in activities that once were exciting, reluctance to talk, frequent crying, and difficulty sleeping. A combination of any of these symptoms would signalize the need to initiate an intervention aimed at the reduction of the factors causing depression and treat the mental state with the applicable measure.
