Write a short paragraph that would be considered an opinion. Write a second paragraph that would be considered a fact. Explain the differences between the two paragraphs. Explain how a reader would know if one statement is opinion and the other factual.

Opinion

I think dogs are the best pets a person can have. They are loyal, loving, and very cute. My grandmother had a dog in her late years that was able to keep her company, provide protection, and was considered a member of the family for her contributions. Dogs are also uniquely capable of working alongside humans due to their ability to be trained. No other animal can be taught to help the blind or find explosives. They are the true best friends of humanity.

Fact

The American Declaration of Independence was ratified on July 4, 1776. It was used to announce that the American colonies regard themselves as independent of the Kingdom of Great Britain and do not recognize their rule. This declaration was signed by 56 delegates representing New Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. It was signed at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia. The ratification of this document was one of the first steps in the creation of the United States.

Differences Between Opinion and Fact

It is not difficult to differentiate between the previous two paragraphs. The first is written in the first person, utilizes anecdotal evidence, and presents information as an absolute. The second is factual because it not only describes an event that has a lot of evidence attached to it but also sites valid sources and presents information without personal input. At times it is more difficult to differentiate opinion from facts, but by using critical thinking, it is possible to discern the accuracy of information. The world is complex, and generalizations often create false information.
