With the end of the Thirty Years’ War and the permanent rise of Protestantism, economic power in Europe shifted from the Iberian Peninsula to northwestern Europe, particularly in England and the Netherlands. How much of a role did the Protestantism that rose in these northwestern European countries have in their emerging economic structures?

One may certainly find a link between the ascension of Northern European economies, most notably the Dutch and the British, in the 17th century and Protestantism. On the one hand, Protestantism emphasized strict self-discipline and modest living, denying the luxuries associated with the Catholic Church. It encouraged the accumulation and effective use of capital instead of lavish consumption spending.

On the other hand, Calvin’s doctrine of predetermination stressed that, even if people could not influence their fate, they could try to deduce it over the course of their life. It meant that if a person was not merely pious but also successful in life – including in business – it was likely that he or she enjoyed God’s favor. As a result, Protestantism created a better public image for successful entrepreneurs, which also encouraged economic development.
