Since the law passed in 1834 abolished slavery in the Northern states and Canada, after 1850, the Black population of Canada increased by 15 000: Afro-American people strived to reach this country. Abolitionists, who tried to evade the Fugitive Slave Act that threatened free Afro-Americans, helped runners and freedom seekers to leave the South via the Railway. Therefore, the impact of the Underground Railway was quite intense because many Afro-Americans managed to escape exclusively due to the railway.
