On November 6, 1987, President Reagan challenged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin wall dividing Communist East Germany from the Federal Republic.

Back in 1961, Moscow supported East Germans in building a wall to prevent their citizens from leaving for the West, by which they separated families and caused a great deal of distress.
