Why is support force on an object normally called the normal force?

A normal force is a responsive push-back force that acts in response to a pull or push. The upward force that balances an object’s weight on the surface is the support force. This force is also called a normal force because it exists in response to a force from another object. For instance, when standing, the normal force is offered by the ground to counteract the effect of gravity.
