The main reason for the increased attention to cultural competence in nursing is cultural diversity, which is evident in most countries with well-developed healthcare systems. In the United States, nurses have to provide high-quality care to a variety of populations, including people from Hispanic, Native American, Eastern European, and other backgrounds. Cultures differ a lot based on people’s attitudes toward health, communication, and traditions. This means that in order to provide high-quality care that takes into account patients’ needs, it is crucial for nurses to have cultural competence and apply it in their work. Higher levels of cultural competence may enhance nurses’ relationships with patients and increase patients’ trust, thus promoting optimal care.
