Why does Berkeley deny the existence of material objects? Explain his view of subjective idealism. Do you accept or reject his theory? Why or why not? Suppose someone claims that he can easily refute Berkeley’s idealism by simply kicking a rock or eating an apple. Does this demonstration show that Berkeley’s view is false? Explain.

Berkeley believed that the human mind is responsible for the existence of materials, and without the mind’s perception, any material is non-existent. He supports his point by claiming that people cannot prove that any material is not a simple creation of their minds. I strongly oppose his ideas because materials that are tangible and external to our bodies are genuine and do exist beyond our thinking process. Consider a scenario with a person who cannot see and hear. As the person walks down the road, they cannot perceive with their eyes or ears. They have no idea about the physical objects that surround them, but this fact does not mean that these objects do not exist. If the person were to bump into one of the objects unintentionally, they would feel it because the material exists.

A popular method of refuting Berkeley’s idea of Subjective Idealism is simply doing something with a physical matter. Samuel Johnson, for instance, kicked a rock to claim that Berkeley is wrong. However, such actions cannot serve as a strong argument against Berkeley’s ideas because both persons perceive the same object, and it can be argued that this object is simply a result of both of the person’s thinking processes. To successfully refute the idea of subjective idealism, a person that is not capable of perceiving through their senses should interact with the object and show that this physical matter is real, although the person had not known about it.
