The significance of learning history cannot be overestimated due to numerous reasons. First of all, it is a relevant statement that those who do not know their past cannot build their future success. Each person should be aware of the major historical processes of his or her country in order to understand the current situation better. Studying history allows individuals to find answers to important questions or make inquiries that may arouse the interest of others. Secondly, it is a matter of self-pride and dignity to be conscious of how one’s predecessors used to live and at what cost one’s commodities and rights were obtained. Thirdly, investigating historical facts is a highly successful method of scrutinizing the world’s affairs. For instance, learning about wars – whether civil or international – provides an explanation of the basic relationships among certain countries or their parts. Hence, it is viable to say that the role of history is highly crucial, and its uses are numerous.
Apart from letting people know about their own countries’ diachronic development, the subject of history also inspires them to study ancient civilizations and travel. Furthermore, history allows individuals to understand the origin of things and languages, clothes and accessories, and many discoveries. Lessons learned from history are always valuable since they incorporate exciting explanations and vivid examples. Hence, I cannot agree with those who consider history to be “a dull, lifeless chronicle.” Apart from having a variety of aims, this discipline employs interesting methods, such as revisiting past events, generating synopses of ideas, and making inquiries. The standards of history as a subject involve the absence of bias, the insistence on the reliability of the facts, and the inclination toward the objective analysis of evidence.
As a future teacher, I am strongly convinced that learning history helps younger generations to understand many other subjects. While studying history may be complicated and “contradictory,” this discipline is closely related to many other subjects. Hence, I might apply it when explaining some significant events or facts to my future students. Also, I think that investigating history can promote such skills as creativity and critical thinking in learners. Therefore, I believe that the study of history is not only interesting but also highly useful due to the multidimensional nature of this discipline.
