Why do you suppose Watts takes time to explain how Catholic doctrines have confused the soul and the spirit? What point is he trying to make? Explain.

Watts takes his time to explain how the catholic faith has confused the soul and the spirit. He says that man is viewed as a dichotomy of body and soul. The body here means an intellectual substance entirely uncompounded and simple in nature and lacking corporeal qualities. These qualities include shape, color, and size. The soul is the self. However, the catholic doctrine has left out the consideration of the spirit due to the implication that the spirit is more than man.

By explaining this, Watts is trying to pass across the point that man consists of two essential elements, the rational soul and the body. He compares this with the previous definition, which says that man has two souls. This definition says nothing about the spirit as a third factor entirely different in principle from a soul distinction upon which the New Testament insists plainly. The spiritual man discerns all things, but himself is not to be disowned by anyone. This principle makes it simpler for man to get a threefold structure of the physical aspect of the soul as a man knowable psychic life like affection, feeling and emotion, and the spirit.
