Pseudowords are pronounceable combinations that meet English spelling rules but have no meaning. The reading of such words implies executing the phonetic decoding by recalling the phoneme-grapheme conversion rules. Since children with reading disabilities struggle to recognize patterns and attack words by decoding them, pseudowords are especially difficult for them. In this connection, problems with these words are one of the indicators of reading disability. Children cannot apply root memory for sight words as the words are unfamiliar to them, which serves as a powerful instrument of revealing disability and referral to further evaluation.
