Upon conquering major parts of Asia and Europe, the Mongols established various practices that had to be followed by their future territories. They used their strategic advantages to take over regions but allowed the acquired areas to retain some authority over minor decisions. Thus, local rulers did not suppress technology and culture from thriving. Moreover, the Mongols invested in trade of goods among the occupied regions, promoting the exchange of knowledge between nations. For example, their use of silk helped the revival of previously active trade routes (Bulliet et al., p. 318). Motifs and colored fabrics from different countries were exchanged between travelers and merchants to produce new clothes for the Mongol nobility. They also imported scientists and scholars to interpret and modify technological advances of other nations. Medicine and astronomy were among disciplines in which the Mongols invested during their rule (Bulliet et al., p. 321).
