Before the 13th century, it had been more dangerous to make such a journey: Pax Mongolica partially contributed to the fact that the movement became safer. Earlier, travelers had been at significant risk of being stopped by residents of warring kingdoms, robbed, or even killed. At the height of its powerfulness, the Mongol Empire possessed enormous territory: due to Pax Mongolica, it was possible for travelers and traders to move via Silk Road without obstructions. Mongols strived to develop and encourage trade within their empire.

For instance, they increased the number of paper money, allowed traders to avoid confiscatory taxations, and built more safe roads. Moreover, Mongols formed associations of merchants to support the caravans. As a result, the Mongol Empire’s prosperity period was suitable for traveling and trade.
