Why did President Johnson and later Nixon escalate the war?

President Johnson escalated America’s involvement in the Vietnam War as containing the Soviet Union was an overriding factor. Nixon continued the escalation as America as the leader of the ‘Free World’ and champion of democracy, could not be seen to be losing to a rag tag army of Communist forces.
