The Japanese soldiers fought to death because it was considered a war with no mercy. They feared being taken prisoner and getting killed after their surrender, which could also be considered an act of cowardice. Their ferocity brought more ferocious from their allies by Japan getting punished for its previous militarism and the expansion by conducting war crime-related trials back in Tokyo. SCAP dismantled the Japanese army, and former military officers were banned from being leaders in the new government.
