The souvenirs included letters that came periodically that assisted in remembering Tahiti. The souvenirs included tapa pareo cloth and a Tahitian appliqué called tifaifai. The tifaifai was the one that was the model of stylized organic decoration that Matisse adapted, forming the main expression of his career. With the letters came to the occasional object from Tahiti as well. These included vanilla beans, dried fruits, printed fabric, and leaf hats. These objects nurtured his memories and the experiences that he had while he was in Tahiti.
