At the beginning of 1820, the so-called Missouri Compromise was achieved, which contributed to the tension that existed in the country. In 1818, Missouri tried to become one of the American states, and the major issue related to the implementation of this project was the slavery issue.
The United States achieved a certain balance between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces in their government, and the inclusion of another state would disrupt this balance. It took approximately two years to solve the problem, and Missouri became a slave state, while a newly accepted Maine was a free state.
Slavery was also banned from a certain geographic point in the south, which also increased the strain on society. The compromise had multiple consequences as it created a precedent when legislation was passed on the ground of the slave agenda, so people could refer to that case when new territories acquisitions occurred.
